Shivani is working to understand the changes induced by adenovirus infection on host cell metabolism, as the changes seen closely resemble the metabolic changes that occur in cancer cells. She plans to study how adenovirus activates specific metabolic genes, leading to increased glycolysis and glutamine uptake and reduced oxygen consumption.
Prior to starting the MD/PhD program at UCLA, Shivani also attended UCLA for her undergraduate training, where she worked in Dr. Utpal Banerjee’s lab. There, she worked to dissect the signaling pathways altered upon oncogenic activation, specifically Notch activation, that led to changes in cell metabolism, using Drosophila as a genetically malleable model system.
